What are the 3 most common baseball injuries?
Baseball injuries are very commonly associated with the shoulder due to the motion of throwing. The repetitive nature of training can cause weakness and instability in a variety of structures in the shoulder which can then result in other areas compensating. This can lead to injury from overuse and will negatively impact an athlete’s performance.
Some of the most common baseball injuries are sprains and strains. These injuries are typically caused by overstretching a ligament, muscle or tendon. If these are untreated, they may result in a partial or complete tear.
Rotator cuff injuries are also very common in baseball players. Overhead throwing uses the tendons of the rotator cuff and with repetition, can cause them to compress. This compression can turn into pain or can cause a tear.
Shoulder instability is another common issue that can develop from the repetitive movement of throwing. This movement will stretch the ligaments in the shoulder which creates looseness in the joint. This can cause the shoulder to move since it is not being held in place properly.
How we can help you!
To improve shoulder pain, our clients tell us that the common solution offered to them by their primary physician is to take painkillers to mask the pain or take time off of throwing. Many patients who visit their primary care physician will also be referred for imaging before traditional physical therapy (like an X-Ray or MRI).
However, this model does not usually provide immediate relief and can take months to get you back into training… and who really wants to take time off anyway!?
This is where a sports specialist physical therapist is a perfect fit for people who feel let down by the traditional healthcare option, or just want to be out of pain and back to their normal life as soon as possible.
We use a variety of techniques to maximize your success, including cupping, manual therapy, kinesiology tape, red light therapy, blood flow restriction training, corrective exercise, dry needling, and more. Your treatment sessions are tailored specifically to your needs each and every time with one-on-one attention from our specialists.
Tipsforinstantrelief:
At our clinic, we understand patients don’t want to rely on painkillers and are worried about the potentially dangerous side effects of these (or more extreme measures like injections or surgery). To help our clients, we always try to achieve pain relief through natural methods.
Below are a few of our favorite tips and tricks.
1. You need to have a shoulder warm-up routine, no matter what sport or position you play.
2. You should have a cool down routine, even if it’s as simple as a few stretches and foam rolling.
3. Don’t be afraid to use modalities at home, such as foam rollers, massage guns, heat or ice.
